Our current novel, The Watsons Go To Birmingham – 1963, is an entertaining story told from the point of view of 10-year-old Kenny Watson. The novel helps makes the issues of racism and the Civil Rights movement of the 1960’s real and relevant to our students.

We are starting a new unit this week in our Imagine It! Curriculum! I am super excited about it! UNIT 5: America on the Move. Our first story is titled The Golden Spike by Dan Elish. I visited this historic site a year or so ago, and it was pretty cool. I’m looking forward to sharing my pamphlets with the students. Our skills practice is over Fact and Opinion, a close read: The Pilgrims: Separating Fact From Fiction, and prepositions! If you need to download our packet, you may do so here or on Google Classroom, where you may find the story as well.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO R.A.C.E?
I really contemplated where to place this post… on ‘Assignments’ or ‘Classroom Expectations’. So, I chose the assignments tab with the caveat that this is the classroom expectation for answering all reading comprehension questions, unless there is a fill-in-the-word space.
All upper elementary students are expected to know how to R.A.C.E:
R – restate the question
A – answer all parts of the question
C – cite evidence
E – explain how your evidence supports your answer
Please consider helping your child meet this expectation! It will elevate their comprehension and written communication greatly!
How can your student log into their Google Classroom to access materials for homework? Easy-peasy! They have their Google log in for Notus Schools, they know their password, and were given the code! Follow the steps below!

Literary Essay Information Due May 22nd
Opinion Planners and Publishing Paper-1v0wgzm
Students are working on this essay through Google Classroom, which they are all proficient at doing! The story is loaded in there as well as the checklist and some graphic organizers that I uploaded above. They can type their five paragraph essay in Google docs and submit it in Google Classroom!
A Literary Essay is an opinion the student forms about a piece of literature. They will form a thesis, support it with three reasons on which they elaborate on in the body of the essay. They end the essay with a conclusion which restates their thesis and reviews their reasons.
They can write about a character, what they learned from the book, or the theme of the book. They may even compare the characters or story to another piece of literature!
